Muscles are one of those things that many people may take for granted, but they play an essential role in our everyday functioning. Muscles are the "engine" that the body uses to propel itself, turning energy into motion. On those occasions when muscle injury and pain happens, the effects can be debilitating, making it harder to move.
At the office of North Park Chiropractic Center, we use electrical muscle stimulation to treat injuries that affect the muscles in order to shorten healing time. Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS), or muscle stim, is a chiropractic therapy normally used on a patient who has a lot of pain or spasm in the injured area. When EMS is performed, a mild electrical current is applied to cause fast contraction to the muscles to help reduce pain, spasms, and improve healing.
We begin the therapy with a low setting and increase the frequency until the patient has reached their tolerance level with the electrodes. The fast contractions of the muscle experienced during this EMS help to fatigue the muscle and allow it to relax, calming the spasm. They also cause the body to release endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers, which also work to help reduce pain cased by the injury. Treatment time can range from 10 minutes or longer, depending on the individual’s needs.
Often described by patients as a pleasant, “tingling” sensation, or “electrical massage,” EMS therapy is often used to treat acute or chronic pain, as well as strains or sprains of the muscles, joints, and soft tissues of the spine and extremities.
